There are a lot of misconceptions around 1 minute short films. It’s too short to fit in a good story. It’s way too short to be professional. Can a 1 minute short even win awards?
So to answer these questions I have made my own 1 minute short film and today I am heading to its premiere at an event called Night of the short films and competing with other short films and there is even an AI film among the selected films.
So why make a one minute short film?
Challenge myself as I haven’t done a real 1 minute short before, but also I had some free time, making a 1 minute short would not require a lot of time and can also be easily made on a low or zero budget. Next to that is that I wanted to see how much I have improved in the last few years and submit this 1 minute short to festivals and different contests to see if I could win from people with longer films.
Can you fit a good story in a 1 minute short?
To make a good film, you first need a good story. And the most challenging thing is to find an interesting story you can tell in the least amount of time. However there are plenty of 1 minute films you can watch online to learn from, but also many commercials are basically short films that are less than a minute and there are plenty of commercials with good stories. So 1 minute is enough, but the question is more are you creative enough to write that story?
Is it too short to be professional? And can it even win awards?
Well I am heading the premiere of my short film as we say and there is a possibility to win an audience of jury award to night.
The film I am most worried about is the AI film, because it is animating vermeer paintings, people might vote for it being new and looks difficult to animate, but having AI generating the animation in reality means the maker just had to put in through an AI to generate it.
Because my film is still going through other film festival, so I can’t publish it yet, but I did win several awards already with my 1 minute short and winning best picture award at London movie awards beating out plenty of longer films.
