Panasonic reveals a mystery camera at NAB Show 2017
Panasonic revealed their new upcoming entry Cinema camera under a blanket at NAB Show 2017, which will be a replacement of the AF100 and sits right between the Varicam and the GH5, it should be a direct competitor of the Sony FS5 and Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro. It should have a Super35mm sensor and coming with an EF mount as it is shown with a Sigma Art lens directly mounted with out an adapter.
Also can be found was a short info list:
- Cinematic Imagery
- Small and light
- Low cost media and workflow
- Previewed at Cine Gear Expo
- Fall release
So from the Cinematic Imagery we can conclude this will have a Super35mm sensor to fit and compete with the other Cinema Cameras. Small and light is we still need to be seen, but from the actual size that I have seen at the booth it is about the same size as a Sony FS5 and from the image about we can expect it so have flip out screen design very similar to the FS5 that can be mounted either on the front or back of the handle, but also that this camera will not include an EVF as there is no EVF eye cup to be seen at the back of the camera, which should lessen the cost of the camera. For low cost media and workflow, it should mean it will write to SD cards which still quite affordable as larger CFast cards which now mainly seen on a lot of Canon Cinema cameras are quite pricey, to get a 128gb card it easily would cost 400bucks while an SD card be more likely around the prices of 100-150bucks. Workflow part should probably mean it be only HDMI but expect a nice chunky full size HDMI out.
What to expect in the specs:
- APSC/Super 35mm sensor (4k sensor)
- IBIS ???
- EF mount
- 4k 50/60p
- 4k 24/25/30 and 1080p 10bit 4:2:2
- Variable frame rate up to 180fps
- No EVF (Electronic Viewfinder)
- Build in (Variable???) ND filter
- XLR ports
- Full size HDMI
- RAW output???
- Supplied with V-Log and REC709L
- Low Light/ISO improvements over the GH5 ???
This camera will be revealed at Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles in June and I will be attending this event also, hopefully get a first hands on of this camera and make a decision if I would like to pre-order one for myself. Right now we can only speculate what the rest of the specifications of this camera can be. As it sits right between the Varicam and the GH5, we can expect it to have quite the improvements over the GH5 giving a good reason to buy this new Camera over the GH5. However one thing that we already miss about this camera is the MFT mount as it would have been great to have the possibility to mount an Speedbooster in front of the Super35mm sensor, like on the JVC LS-300 or Sony Fs5 and FS7.
