Sony A5100 vlogging test

This was entirely shot on Sony A5100 on a Joby compact action gorilla pod. Filmed on XAVCS with Portrait picture profile with -3 contrast, daylight shots been slightly graded to darken the blacks in the shots. All audio are recorded with the onboard mic. Last shot went out of focus, because was not using face detection, but center point tracking and seem it lost track of my face when I move the camera around to show the light.

I did a continues recording run on my A5100 with v3.10 firmware and the screen closed with a full battery and this is what I notice happening:
At 17min the overheating icon started to show up and it kept recording till 24min and it stopped recording and the camera turned off and the battery was surprisingly at 77%. The heat is only behind the camera screen and the battery actually still feels cool, the other part that also feels hot also is under the flash.

I let it cool down and put in a fresh battery flip up the screen as in selfie mode and also pop up the flash and see if it can cool itself down better. From 10 min you can feel the opened back getting quite warm, this time the overheating icon showed up at 18:30min and this time it easily passed 24min but this time the battery is on 85%. And managed to reach 29:40min and the battery life was 79% before it stopped recording.

So at least improved upon the recording time to close to the 30min limit and from the battery limit would think you should be able to record 2 hours from a single battery. Also quickly restarted the camera and did directly recorded to see how long you can record another recording, this time the overheating icon appeared at 5min mark and shut down at 6min.

So from this test was able to know if you need it to record something of 29min it can actually do it. However it’s also dependable on the style of vlogging if are you like Casey Neistat, saying quick things in few sentences your takes are like 30sec to 1 minute and not 29min. Personally for me the camera is good for vlogging as I also just say few sentences and not a long take or long story that would take 29min and maybe just few minute to max 10min.
